Graduated from Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University in 1973, School of Western European languages and literature. Defended the candidate thesis on Myth and Ritual in Western Georgia at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of Armenia, Yerevan in 1987.  Defended doctoral thesis on Symbol and Ritual in Georgian Culture at the archaeological Center of the Academy of Sciences of Georgia in 1997. Has been an Associate Professor at Ilia State University since 2006. Worked at Ivane Javakkhishvili Institute of History and Ethnology during 1974-2010. Was a visiting professor at Tbilisi State Academy of Arts during 1993-2005. Conducted a research in anthropology on her chosen field at the University of Oxford in 2009 (for a Hilary semester) and presented the findings to a wide audience of scholars at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology and International Gender Studies Centre. Participated in a RESET-project during 2010-13, funded by the Open Society Foundation on Anthropological Approaches to Religion and Secularism. She is the author of approximately 90 scientific articles , three monographs and two joint monographs on religion
