Nino Makhashvili has a medical degree from Tbilisi State Medical Institute, a diploma in Psychiatry from the Institute of Psychiatry, Tbilisi and PhD degree in Public Health from Ilia State University, Tbilisi Georgia. She has worked as a psychiatrist in in-patient and outpatient clinics. Since mid-90’s he has been involved in the field of social psychiatry and psycho-trauma work with refugees and IDPs, prisoners, victims of interpersonal violence, torture survivors, etc. Nowadays she, serving as a director of Foundation “Global Initiative on Psychiatry – Tbilisi”, works on structural changes of mental health field in countries of Caucasus and Central Asia, also Ukraine, Sri-Lanka, etc; GIP-T team is promoting rights-informed policies and evidence-based mental health.
Nino has clinical, academic and service development expertise in the fields of community mental health care and post-emergency psychosocial response areas.
As an associate professor and a head of Mental Health Resource Center at Ilia State University Nino is involved in academic teaching and research activities. She is one of founders and a lecturer at Master’s Program on Mental Health since 2012. She joined the PhD program at the Business School in 2017 with the new course on community-based participatory research.
Nino has published a variety of book chapters and scientific articles. She served as the editorial board member of “European Journal on Psychotraumatology” (2010-2016) http://www.eurojnlofpsychotraumatol.net/index.php/ejpt/index
Was on the board of European Socioaty of Traumatic Stress (2009-2013) https://www.estss.org;

Nino is often utilized as Mental Health expert by World Health Orghanization (WHO) and Council of Europe/Pompidou Group.
She leads Georgian Society of Supervision and Couching and is ex-president of Georgian Society of Psychotrauma (GSP).

Research interests include: the mental healh policy, startegy and programs; epidemiology of mental disorders; evidence-based and human rights-informed service development; healthcare systems; quality assurance in health services; evaluation of innovative programs; also specific  topics as deinstitutionalization, community-based services and human rights practices in closed institutions, post-emergency psychosocial care, structural reforms in prison mental health and forensic psychiatry, juvenile justice.
