In 1979 Maia graduated from Tbilisi State University, qualification – philologist, teacher (English language and literature). In 1983 she finished a post-graduate degree course at Maurice Thorez Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages in Moscow; thesis: “Linguistic and Stylistic Analysis of English Textbooks in Humanities.” While doing her degree and after (1980-1990) she published articles on stylistic features of scientific English.
She has been teaching English since 1984: general English, English for Specific and Academic Purposes (ESP and EAP) and corresponding Cambridge ESOL examination preparation programmes. In 1997 and then in 1999 Maia was awarded international certificates as a teacher of English as a foreign language – IH London and LCCI Cert TEB, accordingly.
Since 1997 she has been cooperating with the British Council in Georgia on freelance basis, as a teacher trainer and an ELT projects’ consultant. From 2010 until 2023 She was a certified Cambridge speaking examiner (for PET, FCE). Meanwhile, she has been a member of local and international English language teachers’ associations (ETAG, IATEFL); as well as International and European Writing Centers Associations (IWCA and EWCA, respectively) and European Association for the Teaching of Academic Writing (EATAW). She has presented at conferences, organized teacher training projects, teacher development courses, joint international projects with partner universities; worked as a scientific committee member, moderator, panel discussion participant, peer reviewer. She has been a National Assessment and Examinations Center in Georgia (NAEC) examiner for several years now. Since 2016 she has been on the editorial board of an international academic peer-reviewed journal “Online Journal of Humanities.”
She has been working at Ilia State University since 2010 first as a methodology advisor, Business English programmes coordinator, and teacher, EAP teacher. She later became a professor at what was then Business Faculty (now Business School at the Faculty of Business, Technology and Education). For several years, she served on the Ilia State University Academic Board and is now a member of the faculty academic board.
In 2014 Maia was appointed director of a newly established Academic Writing Centre. Since 2018 has served as the Academic Manager of General Module English Teaching. She has been supervising ESP and EAP teaching programmes.
