Ivane Abiatari completed his medical education in Tbilisi in 2003, after which he continued his studies at the Ph.D. level at the University of Heidelberg, European Pancreas Center (Germany). From 2007, he continued his research and clinical work at the Technical University of Munich (Germany). In 2010, he defended his Ph.D. thesis within the joint doctoral program of I. Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and the Technical University of Munich. The thesis title is “Characterization of perineural invasion of pancreatic cancer.” In 2011, he obtained the qualification of a General Surgeon. From 2007 to 2013, he worked as a Postdoc and visiting doctor at the University Hospital of Klinikum rechts der Isar (Technical University of Munich). Since 2013, Ivane Abiatari has been an Associate Professor at Ilia State University. In 2018, he became the director of the Institute of Medical and Public Health Research, and since 2020 he has been appointed as the head of the School of Medicine. Under his supervision, Ilia State University operates an English-language MD educational program and an English-language Ph.D. program in medicine. He holds a Specialist Certificate in Medical Education (AMEE).

In 2006 – 2010, Ivane Abiatari received research scholarships from “Boehringer Ingelheim,” DAAD, and “Fritz Thyssen” foundations. In 2017, he was awarded the Best Young Scientist of Georgia (Rustaveli Science Foundation). In 2017 – 2019, he was a beneficiary of the GIZ/CIM program. In 2022, Ivane Abiatari obtained the Fulbright scholarship for Exchange Scholars (Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA).

Ivane Abiatari has published more than 30 papers in peer-reviewed journals.
