1978 graduated Faculty of Biology, Tbilisi State University (Georgia); 1983 defended PhD thesis “Functional properties of Na,K-ATPase” (The National Academy of Sciences of Georgia). Worked as a researcher in the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia and in the Institute of Teachers’ Training of Georgia. 1993 defended Doctor of Science (Habil.) thesis ‘Structural and functional optimisation in biological systems’ (The National Academy of Sciences of Georgia). In 1994 graduated the Certificate Course in Environmental Education (Jordanhill College, Strathclyde University, Glasgow, Scotland, UK). Worked as Associate Researcher in Chiba University (Japan), Ramon-y-Cajal Fellow in Consejo Superior de las Investigaciones Científicas (Spain), Associate Professor of the University of Tokyo (Japan). The major lines of research: plant community ecology, species diversity and geographical distributions on ecological gradients, rules of species coexistence and interactions among organisms, environmental education, ethnobiology. Published over 300 scientific and educational articles journals. Has cooperated with Ilia State University since 2006. In 2012 became a professor of ecology, since 2014 is a full professor and since 2015 the director of the Institute of Ethnobiology.
