Nino Makhashvili has a medical degree from Tbilisi State Medical Institute, a diploma in Psychiatry from the Institute of Psychiatry, Tbilisi, and a PhD degree in Public Health from Ilia State University, Tbilisi. Since the mid-90s she has been involved in the field of social/community psychiatry and psycho-trauma work with refugees and IDPs, prisoners, victims of interpersonal violence, torture survivors, etc. She, serving as a director of the Foundation “Global Initiative on Psychiatry – Tbilisi”, works on structural changes in the mental health field in countries of Caucasus and Central Asia, also Ukraine, Sri Lanka, etc; Nino supervises services such as Club Synergy – a clinic for vulnerable youth; and Solatium, a service offering mental health and psychosocial support to war-affected communities.

Nino has clinical, academic, and service development expertise in the fields of community mental health care and post-emergency psychosocial response areas.
As the professor of healthcare and the head of the Mental Health Center Nino is involved in academic teaching and research activities. She is one of the founders and a director of the Master’s Program on Mental Health and a co-director of the doctoral program on public health.

Nino serves a senior mental health expert at WHO – Europe and the Council of Europe, involved with the capacity building of various professionals in different countries. She is an honorary member of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA).

Scientific interests / research interests

Prof. Makhashvili has published a variety of book chapters and scientific articles. She is on the editorial boards of the journals and Cambridge Prisms: Global Mental Health. Her research interests include the mental health needs of war-affected populations, trauma-informed and trauma-specific interventions, mental health systems and policy, epidemiology of mental disorders, and human rights in mental health

Prof. Makhashvili leads the Georgian Society of Supervision and Coaching and is ex-president of the Georgian Society of Psychotrauma (GSP).

She serves on numerous boards as the Consultative Council on Mental Health to the Parliament of Georgia, the Mental Health Policy Advisory Board at the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs of Georgia; the National Inter-Agency Coordination Council on Criminal Justice Reform at the Ministry of Justice; the advisory board to NPM at Public Defender Office.
