პროფესორი, პოლიტოლოგიის საერთაშორისო ურთიერთობების და უსაფრთხოების კვლევები
1976 წელს გია ნოდიამ დაამთავრა თბილისის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტი ფილოსოფიის სპეციალობით, ამავე სპეციალობით 1982 წელს დაიცვა დისერტაცია და გახდა ფილოსოფიის მეცნიერებათა კანდიდატი. 1980-დან 2001 წლამდე მუშაობდა საქართველოს მეცნიერებათა აკადემიის ფილოსოფიის ინსტიტუტში უმცროს და უფროს მეცნიერ-თანამშრომლად, სწავლულ მდივნად, განყოფილების გამგედ. პარალელურად, 1992 წლიდან დღემდე (გარდა 2008 წლისა), ხელმძღვანელობს დამოუკიდებელ კვლევით ორგანიზაციას – მშვიდობის, დემოკრატიის და განვითარების კავკასიურ ინსტიტუტს.
2008 წლის თებერვლიდან დეკემბრის ჩათვლით გია ნოდია იყო საქართველოს განათლებისა და მეცნიერების მინისტრი.
2006 წლიდან გია ნოდია ილიას სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტის პროფესორია.
სხვადასხვა წლებში იმყოფებოდა ხანგრძლივ კვლევით მივლინებებში, ან ასწავლიდა კურსებს ვუდრო ვილსონის ცენტრის კენანის ინსტიტუტში, დემოკრატიის კვლევის საერთაშორისო ცენტრში (ორივე – ვაშინგტონი), ბერკლის უნივერსიტეტში, ბერლინის „ვისენშაფტკოლეგში“, ბონის უნივერსიტეტის ევროპული ინტეგრაციის კვლევის ცენტრში, ჰქონდა ემილ ფრანკის სტეპენდია ბრიუსელის თავისუფალ უნივერსიტეტში, სამჯერ (2013-15) საქართველოს პოლიტიკური განვითარების კურსს ასწავლიდა გლაზგოს უნივერსიტეტში.
გია ნოდია რამდენიმე საერთაშორისო სამეცნიერო ჟურნალის რედკოლეგიის წევრია: Journal of Democracy. Comparative Strategy, Caucasus Survey.

გია ნოდიას სამეცნიერო ინტერესები შეეხება ნაციონალიზმის, დემოკრატიზაციის, ზოგადად, პოლიტიკური განვითარების პრობლემატიკას. ეს ვრცელდება როგორც ამ საკითხების თეორიულ ასპექტებს, ისე საქართველოს, კავკასიისა და პოსტკომუნისტური სამყაროს კონკრეტულ შემთხვევებს.
