Position:Associate Professor
Levan Tielidze is a PhD in Geography, specializing in Glaciology and Geomorphology.
From 2006 to 2018, he worked as a Research Scientist at the Institute of Geography, Tbilisi State University of Georgia, and from 2018 to 2020 as a Senior Research Scientist. Between 2019 and 2023, he conducted research at the Antarctic Research Centre, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Since 2023, he has been a Research Fellow at Monash University, Australia.
He undertook research fellowships at the Climate Change Institute, University of Maine, USA (2014-2015), the University of Northern British Columbia, Canada (2015-2017), and the University of Zurich, Switzerland (2018).
He serves as the Official Correspondent for Georgia to the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS), the National Correspondent for Georgia to the International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS), and is a Member of the Council of the International Glaciological Society (IGS). He is also the Caucasus Regional Representative of the Global Land Ice Measurements from Space (GLIMS) initiative and a co-founder and member of the International Society of Georgian Scientists.
In recognition of his scientific achievements, in 2014 he was awarded the Tbilisi State University Medal and in 2016 the Tsinandali Prize in Natural Sciences. In 2017, he was named Best Young Scientist in Georgian Studies by the National Science Foundation of Georgia. In the same year, he was awarded a prestigious five-year research fellowship by the Georgian National Academy of Sciences. In 2023, he received the Pascal Prize from Ilia State University of Georgia. In the same year, he received the New Zealand Geographical Society Award for the Best Doctoral Thesis. In 2025, he was awarded the National Science Foundation of Georgia Prize for Outstanding Scientific Achievements in the Natural Sciences, one of the country’s highest honours for excellence in scientific research.
Levan Tielidze is the first Georgian scientist in the history of independent Georgia to conduct scientific research in Antarctica. He is also the only Georgian to have participated in two consecutive Antarctic research expeditions: the 2023-2024 expedition to Wilkes Land and Queen Mary Land, and the 2024-2025 expedition to Dronning Maud Land.
