Svetlana Berikashvili obtained her PhD in Linguistics (2006) from Ivane Javkhishvili Tbilisi State University, her Master’s degree in Classical Philology (2002), and her BA Hons in Georgian Language and Literature; Modern Greek Language and Literature (2000) from the same university. Prior to joining Ilia State University, Svetlana held a PostDoc position in General Linguistics at Bielefeld University, Germany (2013-2016) and a Researcher position in Generative syntax at the Joint Lehman-Haupt International Doctoral Program of Ilia State University and Georg August University of Goettingen, Germany (2018-2022). Since 2005 Svetlana has been teaching various courses on Greek Language and Linguistics at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. 2011-2013 as a coordinator of the corpus projects at Ilia State University, she contributed to the development of the Georgian Language corpus.

At different times she was invited to give lectures and talks at various universities in Europe, such as National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece), Bielefeld University and Georg August University of Goettingen (Germany). Svetlana is a member of different international organizations, including GLOW (Generative Linguistics of Old World) and SLE (Societas Linguistica Europea). She systematically participates in international conferences and workshops and is the author of three monographs and more than 30 scholarly publications.
